Rick specializes in beginner, novice and intermediate shotgun shooting lessons.  He will teach you proper set-up, mount, clay target presentations and a practice plan for you to use on your own after each lesson. Rick uses a proprietary HD video camera that can attach to any shotgun barrel.  The videos capture not only the movement of your shotgun but also the shot string or pattern on its way to break the clay target.  Still photos are extremely helpful to show you what he sees and describes to you.  Before and after photos and a summary of lesson topics will be emailed to you following the lesson.   His charge is $85 per hour for up to 2 people.

“About a month ago I was ready to put the gun down and give it up, I had shot a 100 bird race and when I finished my right cheek was black and blue and sore to the touch and I had my worst score in two years.  I could not figure out what was happening to me or the gun to make this happen.  I called Rick because he was there and helped when Dennis Devault was fitting my gun.  Rick told me to come on down and lets see whats happening,  It took him only  few minutes to notice it wasn’t the gun that was wrong it was me.  He suggested a few changes in gun mount and head position and then like clock work I was shooting again without pain and without the gun smacking me every shot,  and the reward for all of that was with my head in better position and a little trust in the hand eye coordination I started hitting what I was looking at.  We shot that day at the 5-stand at Dewitts and I hit 21 out of 25.   Thanks a lot Rick for the help and time to get me straight, and thanks for the friendship.”

“You turned me around 180 degrees on the first lesson and the  subsequent lessons were just as informative and important as the first.  I think any shooter at any level can benefit from a lesson with you.”

N.C. Youth Shooting Foundation

In 2011, the N.C. Youth Shooting Foundation, a 501(c)3, and now an IRS approved non-profit  was founded by Mr. Mitchell.  It’s purpose is to “…introduce shotgun sports to youths in grades 4-12, in a safe and closely monitored environment.

Brian C. ” My 12 year old son joined the NC Youth Shooting Foundation about 3 months ago. Having known Rick for many years I was not at all surprised at his enthusiasm for working with the kids. His knowledge of the sport and ability to interact with the kids and their families puts everybody at ease. He teaches safety in a way that the kids understand without being scared and that they not only look after themselves but each other.   My 10 year old son will be joining next year and we are all looking forward to the monthly shoots and fellowship with other foundation families. ”

Mark B. – Conn., “I took my son to DeWitt’s as a first time shooter to learn about gun safety and the sport of shooting.  I was very impressed with the facility but was even more impressed with your communication and teaching skills.  We could not have had a  better experience!

There will be organized shoots on the first Saturday of every month from February through July 4 shooting ranges, The Fork in Norwood, Deep River in Sanford, Buchanan Shoals and of course, DeWitt’s.  To find our more about the NCYSF, please contact Rick at 910.691.2644.
